Motor Trend does an extensive comparison between these “economy” vehicles. It’s pretty long so if you want to know the results, here they are (with brief explanation):
“1ST PLACE
MAZDA3s GRAND TOURING
Still looks fresh, still dances like a sport sedan, still a steal, still the best.
2ND PLACE
HONDA CIVIC EX
Avant-garde design and small carbon footprint can’t compensate for lack of excitement.
3RD PLACE
SUBARU IMPREZA 2.5i PREMIUM
Serene, all-weather champ hindered by weight and subpar tranny.
4TH PLACE
TOYOTA COROLLA XRS
Solid, quick, and capacious but lacks cohesive feel of others.”
Be sure to check out page 3 about the Impreza.
Also page 7 is quite interesting with a long list of great specs of each car. (You can view the complete article here).

the I just don’t understand how they can choose the mazda there - the Subie had AWD, the Honda has better mileage (By a lot) and Honda reliability, and the toyota is likely the most refined. It seems like the Mazda won because it has 17″ wheels and a tighter suspension… which doesn’t sound like enough when there other great cars are there.
Haha, yea I would’ve put the Mazda at the bottom of the list…oh well, guess 17″ wheels equals like a million points.
This is a test that i can easily laugh off, i think we can all agree this isnt a test for subaru, even if its the 2.5i I mean look at what we are up against, not the kind of cars you see up against Subaru in a vehicle vs vehicle test.
