Well, it’s official. Subaru and Toyota have been in talks for a while to work together on rear-wheel-drive sports car implementing Subaru’s boxer engine and it’s now confirmed. The news about it is all over the place now and various sources about it filled up my mailbox today (Read the news from Car and Driver, click here).

Here’s some specifics about the car itself that I got from the article:

  1. No details about the boxer engine that will be used in the sports car, but there’s speculation that the 2.0 or 2.5 liter turbo engines would be the likely candidates.
  2. Toyota is planning to place the engine further back to the rear of the engine bay to give the powertrain a “front midship-like” location, which they say will help improve handling and balance.
  3. Expected to be in the market around 2011.
  4. Will cost around the $20,000+ (USD) range.

I’m sure there’s a few purists from both sides that will not like this joint venture for various reasons, but most are pretty excited about this. I think it just proves that Subaru has a great engine and this venture means more awareness, meaning more business, meaning more “win”. :D
