The Local Subaru Meets Series showcases some of the Subaru meets running all across America. We head to the Tri-State Area and talk to Vinny (Gatchaman on NASIOC) to get some information on the Hudson Valley Meet. Sounds like a great meet with a few surprises once in a while too! (Minor editing was done by me.) :D

So tell me about yourself: I’m 34 years old, married with a 3 year old son. I love cars, like watching car racing especially Formula 1, I also like to hike, go camping, play paintball, fish and even go birding. I also am somewhat of an artist. You can see some of my work by going to www.vincentbihn.com. I own a wingless blue 2004 STI. It’s lowered, with header, up-pipe and down-pipe, window tint, Cobb exhaust, Cobb short throw shifter, Defi Gauges, Cobb access port, and its been Pro-tuned by XXTuning in CT. The Rims are 18” Prodrive GC-10’s in British Black. Unfortunately this past winter I hit a patch of black ice and banged up the passenger side of the car pretty good. It will soon be going into the shop to be fixed and the whole car painted in a 3 coat metallic dark gray.

Could I get a brief description of your meet: It’s a weekly meet that’s held every Friday night. The meet starts at 8:30pm and usually goes until 12:00am – 12:30am. Near the end of the meet there is usually a cruise. The meet is officially a Subaru meet but anyone is welcome just as long as they bring a good attitude. This year will be our 2nd year having the weekly meet.

What’s the routine? The meet starts at 8:30pm and then we usually talk for a few hours. Cars come and go but we have been averaging about 20 – 30 cars a week. At around 10:30 – 11:00pm we usually go for a cruise. We typically end up at a different location then the original meeting spot, usually it’s a parking lot of some sort. We then hang out there for an hour or two until everyone eventually disperses.

Why or how did you decide to come up with it? Ever since I was 16 I had fast cars and always hung out with other car enthusiasts. The last few years I noticed that the local car scene was getting full of some ….well lets just say they weren’t the kind of people I wanted to be hanging out with. This did not put an end to my desire to want to hang out with other car people. So I decided to try and start a new meet with just Subaru owners. I announced the idea on a Thursday evening and that Friday we had 6 cars show up for the first meet. Each week it just continued to grow and grow.

How long has it been running? This will be our 2nd year. This year is going to be bigger and better then last year. We are planning more activities this year outside of the normal weekly meet. Last year we ended the year with a big barbeque and it was a huge success. We want to do more things like the BBQ this year. Some of the ideas we have come up with are going Go-kart racing, taking a long drive with the cars and then camping out over night, getting together and playing paintball, etc… We also would like to have at least 2 or 3 BBQ’s this year.

What’s the atmosphere like?Is it pretty chill? Oh yeah, it’s great. The people are really really cool, there is never any attitudes, arguing, fighting, reckless driving in the area of the meet, drinking, drugs, etc… In fact we have a list of do’s and don’t rules that is on the forum at nasioc.com and iwsti.com and on the flyers we hand out to people. Everyone has been really good and abiding by them. The night usually consists of all of us just standing around talking and laughing about what ever.

What’s the age demographics? Teens? Young-adults? Middle-Aged? Mixed? It’s a real mix bag of ages and people, we’ve had people as young as 16 – 17 to guys in there 60’s. We have people that are married and people that are not, people of different races and religion. None of that seems to matter in the least bit. Everyone gets along great regardless of age, color or marital status.

Can you name any of the regulars (NASIOC or real names)? I don’t think I should with out there permission.

What’s the average number of people that come to it? Last year we averaged about 20 to 25 cars a weak, so with some people bringing wives, girlfriends and friends it comes out to a little more then that.

Got any cool/funny stories? We have a few. One night a nice gentleman stopped by with his Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren. He hung out for a while, even popped the hood and showed us the engine. Then when leaving did a nice 360 burnout. Normaly that kind of driving in the meet area is frowned apon but that night there were no frowns, just big grins. (*Editor’s Note* Very Nice!)

What’s some of the sweetest rides you’ve seen at the meet? Well the Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren would have to top the list. We have had some realy sick STI’s show up. Some pushing over 500 WHP. We have also had Evo’s, Mazda RX7’s, and lots of other nice cars show up.

Best parts of the meet? The people, no question. Most of us have become really good friends. And if someone has a problem with there car or have some parts they need help installing you can count on the people there to offer a lending hand.

Worst parts? When the cold weather comes and the meet ends. People have met during the winter months but it’s only a few die hards. It’s a long cold 6 to 7 months waiting for the meet to start back up again.

Big thanks to Vinny for giving great responses and letting us get a peak on the Hudson Valley Meet!
