About Open Source Tuning
Open Source is a set of principles and practices on how to write software. Literally “open source” means the source code is available to the users. Basically, if I tune you car with open source software the map I design for you is yours to keep and modify as you see fit. I will even help train you to use software to log and further modify your car if necessary. This is done with not only the intent on getting the most out of your car, but educating the end user if they are interested in learning more about their own vehicles.
Risks of Tuning
With the pursuit of any reward there are always risks involved. While we can mitigate these risks by utilizing accurate tuning devices such as a wideband o2 sensor, exhuast gas temperature, knock sensor, etc. - its impossible to account for every variation of variables. As a motor builds power greater load is placed on it’s compenents, which in certain circumstances can lead to failure. This is true when tuning using any interface, not just open source. Its important to acknowledge these risks when in the pursuit of power.
Rewards
With this being stated, by tuning with accurate tools some amazing power can be realized at very affordable level. Moreso than ever in the history of import tuning, the technology available at the consumer level has empowered many people to get the most out of their cars.
