Stuff Subie Freaks Like #2: Clean Sleeper Look

Unlike several other “import” enthusiasts, I can safely say that a majority of Subie Freaks prefer to have a clean and nearly stock look. Most of us cringe at the thought of underlights, crazy bodykits, and other various things which some may consider “ricey”. As an example, I made a screensaver recently for NESIC and many voiced out about a “ricey” Subaru image in it…and I had to agree. Of course, the huge spoiler and hood scoop (on the STi) definitely doesn’t add to the non-”rice” look, but, at least it’s stock like that, and the hood scoop is functional. Why do most of us feel like way? Maybe it’s due to the common demographics of Subaru owners (a bit older, similar education backgrounds, similar lifestyle, wiser lol?) . I think most of know what Subaru is really all about, and that we “get it”. To quote Howl from NASIOC:
“One important factor with Subaru is that they are primarily built to function well and not to look good. It’s what makes Subaru stand out from the competition. Most people who buy Subarus appreciate the performance and handling of a car more than the looks. When someone buys a Subaru and then dismantles the functionality, it shows that the person doesn’t really understand what Subaru is all about.”
Function over form. Yep, I think Subie Freaks will agree on this.

This kinda goes back to my earlier post, on how different the subie culture is when compared to others. Though i have to admit i have sinned with my subie, I have a chargespeed body kit i put on for hin and nopi, i keep the rear bumper and side skirts on year round and the front only goes on for shows.
I guess the sleeper look is love or hate. A lot of people like the sleeper look (I’ve seen a bunch of well done clean subies), but I tend to take the other, more obnoxious route. While the body kit wont be changing much, I do everything else I can to make my car stand out more–Hella Supertones, STi wing, STi scoop (coming soon), exhaust cutout, etc. Why? Because I can.
