To Buy or Not To Buy: Older STi or New WRX

A recent thread appeared in NASIOC that asked which would be the better purchase. I think it’s a good question….on one hand, buying a new WRX will give you the benefits of buying a new car in general, but will be missing out on the big performance gains of the STi. Buying an older STi however, may cause you problems due to the fact that it’s a used car (especially a performance car).
A couple members bring up great points as well. For example Ron (aka unabomber on NASIOC, catch his performance guides on Subie Freaks which are located on the top menu!), brings up the question of insurance. This could definitely be a deal breaker which often times go unnoticed.
In my opinion, I would really need to take a good look at the used STi and bring along a friend that’s more knowledgeable than I. I know even bringing a friend and getting it inspected by a mechanic, you won’t find everything, but it definitely gives you a better guess on the history of the car. After that, I’d determine what’s the Pros and Cons of each vehicle (used STi and new WRX) in a list and look at what’s more important or beneficial to me.
So, which car would you get? Decisions, decisions.

I think you have to ask first what are your plans for the car and how much you have to throw at it. If you know before buying the car you are going to throw a perrin turbo kit, cobb ap, tbe, meth ect.. on within weeks even a couple months after buying the car then imop the better buy is the wrx you are the type of person that would enough bones from the price difference and money in the bank to buy a new tranny and sell the new/old one on nasioc. If you are the person who will be slowly modding trying budget, then the STi is for you. You’ll have great performance out of the gate, stock you’ll be able to spank a lot of rides out there , and even at a show your an eye catch.
In hind sight i probly would have bought a wrx because i was pushing 450 hp within 2 months of buying the car new.
