Will The Partnership With Toyota Mess Up Subaru’s Image?

theautochannel.com posted this article recently which I found quite interesting. For those that are not aware, Toyota and Subaru will be joining forces to make a rwd sports car, powered by Subaru’s boxer engine, in the near future. The article basically raises concerns on how Subaru will differentiate its car from the Toyota badged sister model. Further more, will this dilute Subaru’s niche image of being an awd specialist by the rwd car?
Mat Nagato, chief of overseas sales at Subaru parent Fuji Heavy Industries, had a few things to say:
“A potential question could be cannibalization. We may lose our longstanding territory, or we may lose the great niche brand image. The potential risk is there. We have to be very smart on marketing strategy.”
